Septic Design And Planning FAQ

What size septic system do I need for my house?

The size of your septic system depends on several factors, including the number of bedrooms, the square footage of your living space, the total number of fixture units, soil conditions, and the available space on your lot. These factors are used to determine the system’s daily design flow rate, which directly impacts the required tank size, treatment type, and leaching bed area.

We conduct a full site evaluation and T-time (soil percolation test) to design a system that meets Ontario Building Code (Part 8) requirements and fits your property’s unique characteristics.

Typically, a standard residential septic system takes 3–5 days from excavation to backfilling, weather and inspections permitting.

In Ontario, old septic systems can be replaced if they’re failing or no longer meet current code standards.

Replacements must follow current Ontario Building Code standards, including proper tank sizing, CSA-certified tanks, and leaching beds designed for soil conditions. A municipal or health unit permit, as well as a site evaluation, is required. Depending on the property, options include full replacement, advanced treatment units for limited space, or partial repairs if components are still functional. Partial bed-only replacements are rarely allowed.
